Walkers is series of high-definition, slow motion video projections on the expressions, gaits, attitudes, wardrobe, interactions and affect of pedestrians as they react to their environment in major cities.
Artist Statement - Walkers
Chelsea, Times Square, Boston, Jamaica, Cambridge, Forest Hills, West Side Highway. More to come. Day, night. Cold, warm. People walking everywhere, solo, in two’s and three’s. Running in packs. Unaware of each other. In tune with their partners. The eye sees what it wants to see, imposing order, relationships and intent where there are none. Or aren’t there?
A mostly naked man in a cowboy hat. A blushing woman. Her boyfriend, pretending to be happy for her. A pre-pubescent girl looks on. Waiting in the wings.
A mother passes, holding her baby. Desperation in her eyes. A father and son appear in that same space. Skipping merrily, a teenager and her little brother. Wary, tense youths. Separated by time. A race, class, gender mashup in the twinkling of an eye.
People reduced to lines and traces of movement. The fabulous in the quotidian. Everyday motions. Extraordinary now. - Roberto Mighty
