CREATIVE CONCEPT

Mount Auburn Cemetery in Massachusetts, was founded in 1831 as "America's first garden cemetery" or  “rural cemetery. With classical monuments set in a rolling landscaped terrain, it marked a distinct break with Colonial-era burying grounds and church-affiliated graveyards. Today, with 98,000 interred over 174 acres, Mount Auburn is a National Historic Landmark and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

More than 200,000 visitors of all ages come to Mount Auburn each year to visit the graves of those buried there, participate in its cultural programs, and commune with nature.

In 2014, Roberto Mighty, MFA was appointed Mount Auburn’s - and America's - first-ever cemetery Artist-in-Residence. Roberto created an original interactive multimedia installation and mobile experience he calls “earth.sky”.

In earth.sky, audiences experience Roberto’s landscape and wildlife cinematography, high-fidelity audio, music and photography -- while hearing the inspiring, sometimes heartbreaking and often uplifting words of individuals interred at Mount Auburn Cemetery from its inception in 1831 to our era.  earth.sky is not about death. It is about living people. People who once walked the earth as we now do. People who live on in the memories of others.

The earth.sky multimedia consists of  synchronized high-definition video and audio projections onto interior architectural surfaces within Story Chapel, a 15th-century English style chapel built of reddish–brown Potsdam sandstone with Gothic details, intricately-carved wood ceilings, and a 19th-century pulpit and pews. The projection surfaces include the ceilings, walls, floors and windows.  Visitors to this immersive installation will be surrounded by sights and sounds.

To voice excerpts from letters, postcards, speeches, poems and prose of the deceased and their loved ones, Roberto is casting and professionally recording actors, actresses, and in some cases ordinary people who have some important connection to interred individuals. Diversity will be taken into account, with some passages spoken in the first languages of the deceased, including Chinese, Persian, Spanish, German, etc.

Roberto began his research with a mission to unearth the contemporaneous life force of interred individuals as remembered by their loved ones and documented by historical texts. There are over 98,000 graves in the cemetery. The task of narrowing that down to a "representative" group seemed overwhelming at first. But as of now, the lives and times of approximately twenty deceased individuals are playing a featured role in the installation.

• Description:  getting.older. is an interactive digital multimedia installation and mobile experience involving filmed responses to questions about advancing age from 79 diverse Americans between the ages of 50 and 100. The installation includes high-definition video; multipoint, individually placed audio clips; digital still photography; physical objects and multiscreen playback.

Artist Statement

We’re all aging. “getting.older.” is a multi-channel, interactive, digital multimedia art/documentary installation about people's personal experiences with aging over between 50 and 100.

Roberto Mighty is spending 2014-2015 filming comments from 79 Americans, aged  50 to 100,  across the country. Besides their spontaneous testimony, every respondent is completing the same sentences, such as “If I could go back in time and counsel my younger self, I’d tell me to……..”

Roberto is editing the video responses with his own digital samples of ambient, multilayered street sounds, street photography, and original music. In his Boston editing studio, Roberto is carefully editing, stacking, layering, compositing, morphing and de-constructing this material into unique, random-access audio/video “packets” for use in the installation and mobile experience.

The  installation will involve multiple projections of high-definition digital video and audio onto carefully selected, site-specific exterior and interior architectural elements of the exhibit spaces.

Depending on the exhibition venue, the video projections will be unusually sited, multiple audience members will be able to experience different aspects of the exhibit at the same time, and no single individual will be able to experience the entire exhibit at once.

Artist Statement

“Wind, Sand & Stars” is a multimedia meditation about the relationship of landscape and wildlife to human perception.  Created entirely on Outer Cape Cod in May, 2014, the exhibit involves HD video, photography, original music and sound design and also includes my minimalist guitar compositions woven into the soundtracks.  

Besides the four-movement visual tone poem “Wind, Sand & Stars”, the exhibit also includes the multimedia compositions “Exhalations” and “Dunes”; fine art photography prints and a video preview of my total collection of photographs from this project. I was inspired by the book “Wind, Sand & Stars” by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, known around the world as the author of "The Little Prince", but also renowned in France as a great literary writer and aviator in the pre-WWII period.

• Description: An immersive digital multimedia art exhibit about the roles of Christianity,

indigenous Spirituality and land use in 17th century central Massachusetts.  

Artist Statement

I knew nothing. Whatever I thought I knew about the Pilgrims, the Puritans and the Native Americans was wrong. After spending a year hiking around, filming in and reading about a 3,500 acre forest in central Massachusetts, I have come to see this as the history of two diametrically opposed — and tragically incompatible — ideas about land use.

Spirituality. Those differential ways of thinking about humankind’s proper relationship to the earth were rooted in the spiritual worldviews of two peoples divided by irreconcilable economic models.

Economics. The clash of the English settlers and the Nipmuc country bands involved the conquest of the domesticated cow over the white tailed deer. Town builders over hunter-gatherers; extractive exporters of beaver pelts and lumber over subsistence growers of maize, squash and beans.

Ethnic Cleansing. Forest-dwellers displaced by deforestation. Wagers of ritual warfare versus a sustained campaign of ethnic cleansing.  Of viruses and alcohol. Of seasonal movers versus property lines and bounded lands.

Genesis. God told the English to tame the wilderness. The Nipmucs were living in harmony with the land. These were the seeds of one hundred years of armed conflict. And the keys to the fate of our world today.

Artist Statement

Ecoutéz brings images of nature into an artificial domestic space, integrating those images with the furniture, furnishings and visitors to the exhibit. Ecoutéz imagines that the shadows, light and reflections of trees that come into our homes can hear us and the noises we generate.

This piece makes us aware of the sounds we unwittingly emanate that these ‘light-trees’ hear. In addition, tree-related found footage reminds visitors of the significance of tree imagery in our culture.

Artist Statement

Dormancy. Death. Decay. It's All Good.

Trees of My City is a personal documentary about the deceased, and the hidden beauty and ecological purpose of dormant, dead and decaying trees in one city over four seasons. Every ending is also a beginning. Deciduous trees -- linden, elm, maple, oak and beech -- lush and verdant in three seasons, appear in Winter to be dead.

Without leaves, their stark beauty can be appreciated by those who love them for what they truly are. Keepers of life and promisers of resurrection. Superstructures for whole communities. Architecturally perfect eco-urban multifamily units. Ultimate recyclers. This film was inspired by the deaths of my mother and my brother, my father's illness, and my daughter’s imminent departure for college. Photographing trees has led to inquiries, like what is a tree to a squirrel? Trees of My City seeks to imagine that. Among other things. 

The film follows the experiences of one calendar year, as I get to know the trees, birds and squirrels in my town and consider how humankind relates to nature. This leads to meditations on endings, beginnings and the possibility of universal consciousness. Family memories and nature observations are woven together as Trees of My City compels viewers to expand their views of death, life and rebirth to include all living things in the fullness of existence.
