Intro to Documentary Filmmaking with Your Video or DSLR Camera

If you have access to a video camera or a video-capable DSLR or mirrorless camera, you already have 90% of the gear necessary to shoot a short documentary film! 

Specially created for beginners, this hands-on, three night, six hour workshop (Mon-Tue-Wed, 6pm-8pm) will teach you the basics of available light documentary storytelling; how to unlock your camera’s powerful video capabilities; what additional gear you need, where to buy it, and how to hook it up to your camera; the special interviewing  techniques the pros use to record powerful, compelling stories; how to incorporate still photos; and where to find legal, inexpensive or even free sources for stock footage and music.

Final Cut Pro X is a flexible, powerful, easy-to-learn professional video editing program for Mac computers. Bring your Mac Laptop with the current version (10.2.3) of Final Cut Pro X already installed. (There’s a 30-day free trial available at the Apple App Store.)

In this hands-on, one-day workshop, you’ll be up and running, doing basic Final Cut Pro assemble editing before lunch! Then, after lunch, we’ll practice refining your skills with inserting, connecting, replacing, titles, music, voice-over, cool transitions and more.

Lights! Camera! Action!: Lighting, Sound & Camera Moves

Let’s have fun while learning. Lights! Camera! Action! ...Sound, lighting, lens choices and camera movement -- done properly -- can elevate your video production values. This hands-on, three night workshop (Mon-Tue-Wed, 6pm-8pm)  will take your creativity to the next level, by introducing you to the basics of cine sound using boom and lav microphones; basic 3-point, 2-point and single-source lighting; fixed-aperture, fast prime lenses and their relationship to storytelling with controlled depth-of-field; and when/why/how to move the camera. You’ll leave with a better understanding of basic sound, lighting, lens choices and camera movement; links to several megabytes of online tutorials; and information about film festivals around the world that accept short film submissions. Note: This class focuses on basic directing and camera work. Editing is taught in a separate one-day course.
